Overview
Chaotic Neutral is one of nine unofficial alignments used to describe a character's personality and ethics sway.
Wikipedia says* on characters of this alignment: "...is an individualist who follows his or her own heart, shirks rules and traditions. They typically act out of self-interest, but do not enjoy seeing others suffer. An unusual subset of Chaotic Neutral is 'strongly Chaotic Neutral', describing a character who behaves chaotically to the point of appearing insane. Characters of this type may regularly change their appearance and attitudes for the sake of change, and intentionally disrupt organizations for the sole reason of disrupting a Lawful construct."
On the law vs. chaos axis, they are chaotic. They either strongly loathe rules and traditions, or simply ignore them when it suits them. The former may follow the law if it doesn't restrict them from getting what they want, and the latter are more likely to break the law no matter what. (Compare to the lawful neutral, who may be overall apathetic towards people, but can be expected to follow tradition for the sake of orderliness itself.)
On the good vs. evil axis, they are neutral, meaning they have no particular wont for causing harm, or lending help, to others. They generally find that killing is usually wrong, but acceptable in cases of self-defense or some other extreme situation. (Compare to chaotic evil, who not only seek to disrupt law but life as well, and the chaotic good, who only break the law in favor of doing a good deed).
Their downfall is the fact that they will probably not be well-liked by any other alignment but their own, and they won't be too well-trusted by anyone at all. They find contracts and promises to be things they can disregard if it suits them, and may not be expected to aide someone if they don't get a satisfactory reward out of it. They are distrusted especially by any lawful characters, neutral, good and evil alike. A lawful good character may even find their apathy towards human life, and breaking the law for any suitably selfish reason, as detestable as being completely evil, and seek to destroy them for being a hindrance on society.
