Neutral Evil
Overview

Neutral Evil is one of nine unofficial alignments used to describe a character's personality and ethics sway.

On the law vs. chaos axis, characters of this alignment are neutral. They are not compelled by any sort of honor, tradition, code, or law, but neither are they completely reckless. They act only as their selfish desires guide them, follow codes only if it serves their purposes, and honor alliances only so far as it fits their needs. (Compare to the lawful evil, who will harm others within allowances of their own twisted laws, and chaotic evil, who pointlessly and wantonly destroy life and order alike).

On the good vs. evil axis, they are evil. They have no compunctions with causing injury or death to others, though they may not seek out to cause it if there's no ends to justify the means. While a corrupt lawyer or politician may be lawful evil, and an anarchic terrorist or relentless serial killer would be chaotic evil, the petty burglar or unscrupulous drug dealer would be nearer to neutral evil. They do what fits their wants, not caring if it helps or harms other (but generally preferring that it harm). (Compare to true neutral, where a character acts however they feel, not entirely against causing injury but generally avoiding it if unnecessary.)

Their downfall is their selfishness, which while not as cunningly organized as an LE or as severe as a CE, will still draw the ire of all good and most neutral characters. They will typically not find it easy to make allies except with other NE or possibly CE characters, and only so long as they find it beneficial to not mutually betray each other. Their somewhat un-extreme antithesis is the neutral good character, who acts without feelings for or against law so long as it benefits others.
