Overview
The exact meaning of god varies greatly in the role-play world, both IC and OoC. To some, it's simply the most powerful beings in the game. To others, it isn't about power, but worship. To some, it just means being immortal, though there've been plenty of gods that have died, so it all depends on who you ask. Generally, if a character can announce they are a god, then prove it by performing loads of miracles and beating everyone in magical combat, and end up getting prayed to for help and wishes and the like, they're pretty much part of the pantheon.
Terminology
I should point out here the different words and their meanings. "Pantheon" literally means "all gods", and "pantheistic" religion is one that believes more or less that gods are everywhere or that everything IS a god (Shintoism is a bit like that, in believing that all beings and objects have a soul). "Polytheon" is more accurate for most RPs and ancient mythologies because it means "multiple gods". "Atheon" of course is "no gods", and "autotheon" I suppose would be the belief in oneself being a god whether or not it's really true. Killing a god is called "deicide". Certain powerful beings that aren't quite on par with the other gods are sometimes called "demi-gods". Representatives of deities, or people created specifically to serve as a mortal messenger for a god are "avatars", sometimes specifically "angels" or the more generic, 'blessed' term, "celestials".
Groupings
Irregardless of the word's literal meaning, a pantheon is understood to be a particular group of gods presiding over a particular race or region. There are also various freelance deities, and genie-like beings, and god offspring, etc.
Worship
Typically, all of the characters acknowledge that all of the gods exist and are real, but pay no homage to them, except sometimes asking for favors in a fix. Some characters don't believe the gods ARE gods (merely powerful, but otherwise normal, people), or that the gods themselves REALLY don't exist at all (this type of atheism is unheard of in a world where the gods walk around on the planet with everybody else). Still, some others are honestly religious, taking part of prayer, offerings, preachings, holy crusades, etc.
